Web 2.0 Recruitment

You may have already heard the terms Web 2.0, Social Media or Social Networking but what do they mean and how can you utilise them in your online recruitment strategy?

Web 2.0 is essentially a term given to the second generation of Internet-based services. If you think of the first generation of web sites on the Internet they were mainly static web pages with little or no interaction.

The second generation of web sites are more dynamic and allow people to share information, create their own user generated content and contribute to online conversations.

Web 2.0 Examples

Some examples of Web 2.0 applications include Social Media and Social Networking sites such as Facebook, LinkedIn and MySpace.

Other examples include video sharing sites such as YouTube and Yahoo! Video, plus photo sharing sites such as FlickR.

In addition, Audio and Video Podcasts can be shared through dedicated podcast sites such as Podcast Alley and iTunes.

Blogs are another example of Web 2.0 applications where individuals or companies can publish their own news, views and information and allow visitors to take part in the conversation by way of posting comments.

Using Web 2.0 For Recruitment

There is no "one size fits all" approach to using Web 2.0 applications as choosing which ones to use will vary from company to company depending on their recruitment objectives.

However, one of the major advantages of using Web 2.0 in recruitment is that you are able to accurately target your message and brand to potential job seekers and also reach people you would never have reached before through traditional advertising.
