Why Aren’t You Making It Easy For Me To Apply For Your Jobs?

mobilephone-frustrationAs a shopper have you ever seen an advert for a great deal on a product the day after it finished? How annoying is that!

Or have you ever seen an advert for a great deal on a product but you can’t make a purchase because you can’t access the website? How annoying is that as well!

But wait a minute, aren’t job seekers also shoppers, as in shopping around for a new job? And if you are a recruiter then I guess that makes you a retailer (of jobs and career opportunities)

So in your role as a retailer how easy are you making it for shoppers to do business with you by way of searching and applying for jobs?  If they are searching for jobs at home (or dare I say at work) on a desktop or laptop then they are probably okay. However, shoppers like to get out and about and they spend a lot of time on their mobile, especially when commuting every day.

The Mobile Experience

So how easy is it for those shoppers to search and apply for your jobs on their mobile? Do they land on your perfectly formed mobile-enabled website or are you expecting them to pinch and zoom across the desktop version on their small screen to try and find the jobs section?

And even when they find the jobs section do they then have to fill out a long online form? And even worse (and to complete their misery) are they then asked to attach their CV or Resume (which of course they can’t do!)

And what about the emails you send out informing job seekers about your new jobs? If they read those emails on their mobile (the majority probably do) will they have the same painful experience as described above?

Make It Easy For People To Do Business With You

Every retail business should be making it as easy as possible for shoppers to do business with them. After all, with no customers there typically are no businesses.

Think about retailers like Amazon and Zappos and how easy it is to shop with them on a mobile? They have clearly thought through the process and made it as easy and simple as possible for shoppers to do business with them because they value their shoppers.

Step Into Their Shoes

Are you doing the same for your shoppers? How easy is it to apply for a job at your company? Put yourself in their shoes, get your mobile out and try! Then ask yourself “am I making it easy for job seekers to apply for a job at our company?”

Remember a question from the first paragraph… “have you ever seen an advert for a great deal on a product but you can’t make a purchase because you can’t access the website? “ Well simply switch the word “product” for “jobs” and you have exactly the same situation. How annoying is that!

500,000 Mobile Job Applications In Only 6 Months!

If you were wondering if job seekers would search and apply for jobs using mobile then this figure of 500,000 mobile job applications in only 6 months should hopefully go some way in convincing you!

As you may already know I am running the virtual Mobile Recruitment Awards on the 27th March 2014 and one of the entries was from JobServe. All the entries are now with the judges and you can watch the results live on the 27th March 2014.

jobserve

JobServe was the Internet’s first job board. Launched in 1994 they released their first mobile website in 2002. Some 12 years later JobServe are now seeing massive growth in the number of mobile job applications. Since releasing the updated version of their mobile website in July 2013 they received 500,000 mobile job applications in just 6 months!

In fact, they have also received 500,000 job applications via their iPhone App in the last 12 months as well!

mobile-recruiting-strategies-260After reading their detailed entry for the Mobile Recruitment Awards I felt that JobServe had a great mobile story to share.

I was therefore delighted when James Wren, General Manager Search Products & User Experience at JobServe, accepted my invitation to speak at our brand new Online Event – Mobile Recruiting Strategies on the 27th March 2014.

Our other impressive speakers include:

  • Leela Srinivasan, Director of Marketing for LinkedIn Talent Solutions
  • Rayanne Thorn, Vice President, Product Marketing and Strategy for Technomedia

Understanding What Mobile Job Seekers Want From Companies

I presented a session yesterday at the Recruitment Agency Expo about “Why Recruiters Need To Go Mobile”

As a speaker it is always great to get feedback on your presentation and content, however this bit of feedback was rather unexpected!

So meet Charlette! Charlette was working at Olympia yesterday checking in delegates as they entered the meeting room. I had presented about why companies needed to go mobile quickly mainly because the demand from job seekers to use mobile is way ahead of what companies are actually offering by way of a mobile user experience.

Afterwards Charlette came up to me and said “Mike, what you said was SO true! I have been using my mobile to search and apply for jobs and the experience is horrible.” So I asked Charlette if she would like to do a video interview that I could share so that companies can see what job seekers are going through and she kindly agreed.

The main points of the interview are:

  • Charlette only has a tablet and an older type of smartphone
  • Charlette doesn’t have a desktop PC and has no intention of getting one
  • Charlette typically starts her job search on Google

These are Charlettes’s main areas of frustration when using a mobile device to look for a job:

  • Very frustrating experience as web pages are “all over the place”
  • It makes her think “I can’t be bothered” and move on to the next one.

In terms of feedback about the mobile job seeker experience:

  • Web pages are too slow to load
  • They need to be kept simple
  • Think about data connection and Wi-Fi speeds
  • Don’t use too many images as they can take too long to load
  • Make sure the text is readable on a mobile device
  • Make sure the web page adjusts for the size of screen (i.e responsive design)

My thanks go to Charlette for taking part in this interview which has some great feedback for Recruiters.

New Mobile Recruiting Strategies Online Event Launched

mobile-recruiting-strategiesI am pleased to announce the first of a series on online events – Mobile Recruiting Strategies

This new online event takes place on the 26th March 2014, the day before the winners of our inaugural Mobile Recruitment Awards  are announced on the 27th March 2014.

In our view 2014 is going to be a big year for mobile. It is one of the hottest subjects affecting recruitment at the moment.  In fact a recent survey from LinkedIn showed a massive gap from what job seekers want when it comes to mobile and what companies are offering by way of a mobile user experience.

About Mobile Recruiting Strategies:

Mobile Recruiting Strategies is a global online event consisting of on-demand presentations, video interviews, case studies and a live expert discussion panel all aimed at helping Recruiters understand:

  • Why mobile recruiting should be a key part of any recruiting strategy
  • How to get started with mobile recruiting and stop missing out on talent
  • How to implement mobile recruiting into your company

Would Any Of The Dragons’ Invest In Your Company?

A new series of Dragons’ Den (one of my favourite TV programs) is showing on the BBC this month.

Whilst there are some great ideas and products for the Dragons’ to invest in a lot of the time they don’t invest. Why? Mainly because the market may not be big enough for them or they don’t feel that they would get a return on their investment.

Dragons Den - Picture courtesy of the BBC
Dragons’ Den – Picture courtesy of the BBC

So how do you feel the Dragons’ would react when a Recruiter enters the Den looking for an investment in their company to help with marketing to attract more job seekers and candidates?

————————————————-

The Scene – Inside The Den:

Dragon: So how many job seekers do you currently get to your website?

Entrepreneur: Around 15,000-20,000 a month

Dragon: And how many of those are mobile visitors?

Entrepreneur: I don’t know

Dragon: It seems like everyone has a mobile these days, presumably you have a mobile enabled website?

Entrepreneur: Err, no we don’t

Dragon: I assume that you notify job seekers by email when you have some new vacancies.

Entrepreneur: Yes we do!

Dragon: Did you know that around 90% of emails are now read on a mobile device?

Entrepreneur: Err, no I didn’t.

Dragon: That’s interesting because what that means is that any of the 90% who click on the job links in your emails will end up on your website which isn’t mobile enabled.

Therefore the chances are that they won’t be able to search and apply for a job. How do you think they will feel about that?

Entrepreneur: Not very happy!

Dragon: Exactly! So let me get this right, you want my money to invest in your business to spend on marketing?

You will then spend that money to attract job seekers to your web site. And once they get to your website using their mobile they won’t be able to search and apply for any of your jobs? So in theory, 90% of your marketing will be wasted?

I’m sorry, but I am here to make money, not lose money, so I’m afraid I’m out!

Entrepreneur: Thank you for your time and valuable feedback.

———————————–

How Much Money Have You Wasted On Marketing Today?

Now whilst the above was an imaginary pitch the reality is that every day companies are wasting money. For example, only 5% of the Fortune 500 companies have a full mobile recruiting process which means that 95% don’t! (Source: iMomentous)

Every day companies are literally wasting money on marketing because once a job seekers follows a link to a website using a mobile phone in the majority of cases they can’t go any further!

Don’t Get Left Behind

If you need help with understanding more about mobile recruitment, and how to incorporate it into your company (and stop wasting money) then make sure you claim your copy of our Free Guide – How To Get Started With Mobile Recruitment.

The guide is totally free – “no questions asked!”
